Headed West

It has been a decade of riding the east coast.  A decade of living in one of the greatest cities in the world, exploring the beauty of New England and visiting areas with so much of our Nation’s history.   An experience I almost let pass by years ago, but I could hear my mother’s voice saying,  “Embrace the experience – life goes by too fast to let things slip by”.  And thank goodness I did it!  I enjoyed every bit – from teaching in an urban school and working on a children’s program with the UN, traveling globally – it’s a hop, skip and a jump to Europe, to meeting my husband, getting married, buying our first home together and the birth of our two sweet children.   New York City is truly a special place and will always hold a piece of my heart with so many cherished memories.

When my husband and I got engaged, I went from living in a high rise on the posh Upper East Side (a small converted one bedroom, of course) to a mid rise, industrial, trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  I went from cycling Central Park to cycling the city bridges.  I will miss the energy and culture of big city living, the diversity, seeing the excitement in my daughter’s eyes as the subway rolls up, walking around a street corner and discovering something new, the endless galleries and exhibits around town, and of course, having a mom and pop’s coffee while sitting at a café on a city sidewalk.  But, the hardest farewell of them all, the cherished friendships and memories that were made.  Ugh.

With a slight hesitation, but knowing it’s the right decision for our growing family, the time has come to move out of the Big City and closer to family.  A decision in the making for a while.  So as we make the Great move west, why not throw in amazing weather, a beach, ocean, palm trees and a more relaxed lifestyle.  Looks like all the signs are pointing straight to The Golden State!

I’m excited to share some of our new adventure to come!  I hope you join me as we explore the west coast, find a new home, decorate, embrace a healthy fit lifestyle, raise children in the San Francisco Bay Area and find ways to create a positive and a health conscious lifestyle.

So California here we come!  We’re not looking back and excited about the next chapter in life.

Hope you join me riding coastal!

The Ultimate Playground

As some of you may know we’re gearing up to leave one of the greatest cities in the world for another great city, San Francisco.  We are headed west in only a few more weeks.  Tear.  So VERY bitter-sweet.  But the time has come.   We’re looking for a little more space (Cade can only sleep in the closet for so long!) a lot more family time and a much desired carefree west coast lifestyle.  So as the big move nears, I hope to share some of our favorite spots and neighborhoods with Maddie and Cade, and you!   Each week Cade has a babysitter for a few hours while Maddie and I enjoy some much needed mother and daughter time around the city.  Over the next few weeks, as I go on a flash frenzy, I hope you will enjoy some of our New York City treasured spots as much as we do!

It was bitter cold this week!  So where does a girl go when the parks are too frigid to frolic in?  Where else, Grand Central.   We decided to have a little fun in one of NYC’s iconic spots.

Grand Central 2

Looks warm inside.  C’mon mommy!

Grand Central 7

Everything seems so big.

Grand Central 4

My favorite spot!  Love hearing my voice travel throughout GC.  Bet everyone loves hearing me sing.

Grand Central 1

Must be in heaven - a gigantic ramp.  One of my favorite things to run and play on.

Grand Central 3

Doesn’t look too crowded right now.  Maybe mommy will get us a train ticket to the beach.  I sure do miss shoveling sand into my bucket.

Grand Central 6

Love making friends with my fellow New Yorkers just by smiling.

Grand Central 5

After all this playing I’m getting HUNG-ry.  Cupcake break.  SO glad they opened a Magnolia Bakery in the food court.  Best cupcakes in town.  Hope they have these on the west coast!

Grand Central 8

I usually don’t like to admit it, but I think I need a nap after all this playing.  Bye-bye Grand Central!  Its been another great day.

When it’s too cold outside where do you like to spend your time?  Would love to hear about it.

My Little City Girl

I did really good in gymnastics and mommy promised me my favorite chocolate milk in Union Square.  Come join me on my subway ride!

subway 1a

The L Train!  Here we go.  My favorite way to get around the city.

subway 2a

Which subway stop is it again?

subway 3a

Just missed my train.  Oh well, I’ll rest my feet a little.

Subway 4a

Better hold tight.  This train ride can be a bit bumpy.

subway 5a

Looks like it’s morning rush hour.  Hope they see me down here!

subway 6a

More stairs!!  One of my favorite reasons to ride the subway.

subway 7a

Uh oh, I’m a slow walker and it looks like the next subway is here.  Those NY subway-goers walk fast!  I better pick up the pace.

subway 9a

Getting excited.  Almost there.

subway 10a

I forgot how many steps there are at this subway stop…whew, almost at street level.

subway 11a

I found it!  I found it!

subway 12a

aaaahhhh…..nothing like my favorite NY chocolate milk in USQ Park and watching the squirrels.

subway 13a

Better head home…I’m missing Cade…

subway 14a

Being short has its advantages.

Another great day on the subway.

What is your favorite way to get around your town…bike, skates, scooter, ect?  Would love to hear about it.

The Closet & The Nursery

tiny space

We all know how tiny some NYC apartments can be!  All of us New Yorkers probably have a story or two, either a great deal we found on a cramped one bedroom converted to two, or that 6 story walk up studio only liveable if you don’t plan on having guests, or that party at a friend’s where all 5 people were elbow to elbow, or that dinner gathering where everyone had to walk through the bedroom, then the guest bedroom, then the bathroom to get to the kitchen.  All this may sound unappealing to some, but there is nothing like looking out your apartment window and seeing the lights, hearing the sounds and feeling the energy of the city.  New York City is definitely one of the greatest cities in the world and there are many lengths one may go through to call a piece of the Big Apple home.  Even myself.

My first NYC apartment I climbed 6 flights of stairs to my little piece of the Apple.  The living room had a small 2 seater couch and if you crossed your legs you had to be careful not to hit the TV in front of you.  It was a duplex and my bedroom was upstairs with a sliding glass door that led to my private balcony, a fire escape.  Oh how I loved my “terrace”!  I would sit in a small chair and read a book, while listening to the energy of my fellow New Yorkers hustle and bustle below on East 86th Street.  It was my minuscule piece of the Big Apple.  And I loved it.

So now, its 9 years later, I’m married with two children living in a 2 bedroom condo.  It has been quite spacious for the 3 of us, however three months ago we had a sweet baby boy and wanted to give him his own space.  So we thought, ‘where in the world do we put him?’  Our NY design instincts set in!  We were both thinking it, but didn’t want to say it…we had to surrender our precious walk-in closet to our new precious.  We turned our closet into a nursery AND had a blast doing it.  Here’s what our tiny space, turned nursery, came out like…

Nursery 1

Phase 1 – We painted the walls with Pottery Barn grey by Benjamin Moore.  Found a small dresser and Monte bassinet.

Nursery 7

Next we decided on a nautical theme using light grey, light blue, white and a touch of navy.  I gravitate towards soft colored nurseries – feels sweet and innocent just like a baby.

Then we added this cute whale, a few boats and seashells to our tiny nautical space.

nursery b22

Always looking for more storage, these personalized Pottery Barn baskets worked perfect.

Nursery 4

A nursery is never complete without precious newborn photos.  We chose black and white.

Nursery 8

Added a glow-in-the-dark star chandelier and VOILA!  A small space with perfect bliss for baby!

Have you been creative in adding space in your home?  Would love to hear about it.

New Year and New…

Wow how time has flown!  I can’t believe its been over 2 months since my last post.  But I have a good reason for being away…we are expecting baby number 2!!  A New Year and new baby-on-the-way!  I was dealing with first trimester nausea and an energetic toddler.  All I can say is…wowzers!  No need to look back – I’m coming around and feeling great!  Ready to get back to reading the blogs I enjoy, posting, and getting out more now that Spring is on the horizon.  And I’m taking advantage of the remaining time I have with just Maddie and me.  With a beautiful baby boy just around the corner in July the mommy and daughter time is so precious.

Missed everyone’s comments and the personal blog emails!  Thought I would share just a few pics from over the last two months…

After Hurricane Sandy we had a blizzard!  We got out and enjoyed a little fun in the snow.  Brief, it was cold!!Became members at the Hall of Science and Brooklyn Children’s Museum.  Two places with so much creative fun for children.  Maddie could explore from sun up to sun down, while mommy caps it after an hour or two!

Took a family trip to Water’s Edge Resort in CT for a weekend get-away.  As you can see we are displaying great parenting skills in this pic.  Sometimes the only way to dine out is to include Elmo!  We also went to California to visit my family and Reno to visit some of Dean’s family for the holidays.  Two wonderful visits.

Then you can’t forget date night.  This night we went to the Opera “Carmen” at Lincoln Center – amazing!  Seems like such a treat to be out past 8pm and get dressed up!  At times I feel like I’m in my early twenties and I just don’t want the night to ever end :)

Do you remember a fun night out you recently went on and didn’t want it to end?  Would love to hear about it.  Have a great weekend!
